ADAM MARSZAL
Adam Marszal grew up in the gas station business. His first job in high school was working with the company maintenance team. He graduated from the University of San Francisco in 2010 with a BA in Business Administration. Through the years, Adam worked for his family business as cashier, island attendant, store manager, and sales and marketing manager. He learned the business from the ground up so he can better understand the needs of his team. When not growing Lahaina Petroleum, Adam spends time with his wife Maggie and their two daughters, Lucy and Blair.

FOUNDER, LAHAINA PETROLEUM, 1946-2021
In 1981, Ed Marszal bought an old Chevron station in Carmichael, California—the first of nearly four dozen gas stations and convenience stores his company would own in five states, including Hawaiʻi. These were the days of full-service gas stations—attendants pumped gas, checked the oil, and washed windshields. As the owner, Ed pumped gas himself and checked under the hood, employing mechanics for repairs. He mopped floors and cultivated a personal touch with customers.
“We always had someone available to run out and help customers,” Ed told a reporter with the Carmichael Times. “We never charged for air or water. Our cashiers were the most important people in our company. Being nice is not something you can teach, but friendliness determines whether a customer comes back.”
“One day, a lady asked me where she could get her car washed. I washed her car myself. My employees watched and learned never to pass up an opportunity to extend service.”
This ethic shaped his children’s careers. “Dad had two rules,” notes CEO Adam Marszal. “Rule One: the customer is always right. Rule Two: if the customer is wrong, refer to Rule One.”
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, this descendant of Polish immigrants was the first of his family to attend college. After graduation, he served the United States Army, then sold auto accessories in California. He worked for Atlas Tire and Supply Company, a subsidiary of Chevron, before purchasing his first station. Ed built the home of his dreams in Hawaiʻi and lived there until he passed in 2021.
Over half a century in the industry, Ed Marszal saw rivals come and go.
“Many lost their focus on service,” he said. “Over the years, our friendly service constantly opened doors for more customers.”
“I didn’t plan an empire. I just wanted to make one station work.”
